Anabolic agents: adjuncts to nutrition support.
Anabolic agents as adjuncts to nutrition support therapy have been used to improve malnutrition and establish anabolism. Growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor, and anabolic steroids have been studied for their potential to reverse the catabolic process and promote anabolism. This paper reviews several anabolic agents and their possible role in nutrition support therapy.
متن کاملStrength Nutrition: Maximizing Your Anabolic Potential
T he practical application of strength nutrition concepts (28), including liquid carbohydrate (CHO), protein (PRO), both whole foods (milk) and specific PRO fractions (whey and casein), amino acid constituents (essential amino acids [EAA] and branch chain amino acids [BCAA]), and mixed nutrient ingestion (CHO/ PRO), has gained popularity. However, an expansive review by Hawley et al. (14), titl...
متن کاملMultimodal nutrition/anabolic therapy for wasting conditions.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Significant progress has been made in the field of defining and describing the pathophysiology of wasting conditions such as cachexia. The number of new promising drugs, nutritional therapy alternatives, and exercise/rehabilitation programs is increasing. The purpose of this review is to give an overview of recent clinical findings from intervention studies investigating multi...
متن کاملPlasma Levels of Anabolic Hormones in Suckling Lambs are Affected by Late Gestational Nutrition
In this study, the effects of late gestational undernutrition (LGU) on plasma concentration of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-I), leptin, insulin and glucose in subsequent sucking lambs was investigated. Ten twin-bearing ewes were fed either restrictedly (Restricted) or adequately (Control) during the last six weeks of gestation and were fed ad libitum after parturition. Blood samples were t...
متن کاملExercise augments the acute anabolic effects of intradialytic parenteral nutrition in chronic hemodialysis patients.
Decreased dietary protein intake and hemodialysis (HD)-associated protein catabolism are among several factors that predispose chronic hemodialysis (CHD) patients to uremic malnutrition and associated muscle wasting. Intradialytic parenteral nutrition (IDPN) acutely reverses the net negative whole body and forearm muscle protein balances observed during the HD procedure. Exercise has been shown...
